Elections are held the first Saturday in May.  Candidate applications and election packets are available at City Hall 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday during the filing period.  The filing period for the May General Election is mid January through mid February, and the specific dates will be posted on the Notice of Deadline to file below:  Deadline is 5:00 p.m. on February 13, 2026.

Handbook for Mayors and Councilmembers

The Handbook presents an overview of the functions, powers, and responsibilities of mayors and councilmembers in home rule and general law cities. Topics covered include policy development, budgeting and financial administration, council meetings, conflicts of interest, personal liability, and media relations.  City of Lorena is a Type A General Law City.

Eligibility Requirements for Candidates: 

To be eligible for the office of mayor of the municipality, a person must be a registered voter, be a United States citizen, be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election; and must have resided within the municipal limits for at least the 12 months preceding the Election Day.  [LGC § 22.032]

To be eligible for the office of alderman of the municipality, a person must be a United States citizen, be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election; be a registered voter and have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the city for six months immediately preceding the deadline for filing for an application for a place on the ballot. [EC § 141.001]

A member of council ceasing to possess any of the qualifications of general eligibility requirements at stated in the Texas Municipal Election Law Manual, or convicted of a felony while in office, shall immediately forfeit his officer.  No member of the council shall hold any other public office.

  City of Lorena is a Type A General Law City.  The mayor and council members are elected at large for a two year term except:

(1) a person is appointed to fill a vacancy will serve only until the next regular election. Tex. Loc. Gov't Code 22.010(b).

(2) a person elected at a special election called to fill a vacancy serves for the remainder of the term. Tex. Loc. Gov't Code 22.010
